Introduction:
Little biographical information is available for J T Mitchell. It is known he worked for many years at the same address as Trewinnard in London. On their shared trade label, Mitchell advertises “miniatures painted”. However, only 1 silhouette is actually ascribed to Mitchell, this depicts the sitter Sir Narborough D’Aeth, painted in colour. A liberal use of gum Arabic is used, and there is a rough shadow at the base of the portrait.
