Introduction:
W H Manners was known primarily as a miniature painter. However, Jackson records a silhouette by Manners of Sir Thomas Swinnerton Dyer, which has a trade label. More recently other writers have attributed silhouettes to W.H Manners by their style and date, although none of these are signed.
The profile recorded by Jackson is painted in dark grey with clothing detail highlighted in gum Arabic and thinned pigment. The depiction of the ear is painted carefully in thinned pigment, a unique detail which has been the key to identifying further work by Manners. The bustline is a typical convex-concave curve.
