Introduction:

Only one profile by HARGRAVES (N/K) is recorded. The subject is Hannah More (1745-1833), the author of ethical books, tracts and poems. The bust-sized portrait, signed and dated under the truncation 'Hargaves 1813' is unusual, measuring barely 11/2 inches in height. Painted on plaster with ochre-brown body colour and well applied gold highlights the work is housed in a small frame of oval fruitwood and is illustrated in Mckechnie. While current research failed to discover any aspect of Hargrave's history, any profiles which may come to light would likely bear his signature.
