Introduction:

Harding is recorded on account of a portrait held in the National Portrait Gallery, and known only by its pencilled signature which reads “Harding fecit”. The subject, who may have been Daniel O’Connell, is described as “Mr Lawless”, an “Irish agitator”, in the inscription. The portrait consists of a bust-length profile, roughly cut from black paper in a typical style.
