London, Thomas (McKechnie Section 2)

See Section Five for main entry

On one of his trade labels London mentions that he worked both on paper and on ivory. He charged 6s for a paper profile. I have seen no signed or labelled silhouettes on paper by London, but it is reasonable to assume that, if any came to light, they would prove to have been painted much in the style of the artist's work on ivory. There is a magnification photograph in Section Five which throws light on his technique. It is doubtful whether the green and grey stippled backgrounds which are frequently seen on his work on ivory would also be seen on any paper profiles by him. The prices quoted on his trade labels suggest that he charged 6s each for the latter, whereas he charged 10s each for his ivory silhouettes.
