Introduction:

Lewis worked intermittently as a silhouette artist between 1808 and 1830. It is very likely he painted silhouettes alongside other, unknown trades. Today three silhouettes have been attributed to Lewis.

Little is known of his background or career, except that he worked for a time in York. We have no information as to how he framed his profiles, but three signatures are known; “T. Lewis, profilist”, “Lewis” and “T. Lewis”. Lewis was not an exceptional profilist, and all his known profiles are on roughly painted wash backgrounds. He used Chinese white and gum Arabic to depict detail. A common feature in all his profiles is the clear delineation of the sitter’s eyelash.
