Fidler, John Henry (McKechnie Section 1)

Recorded by Woodiwiss (British Silhouettes), who states that he was in practice c. 1840. As the artist used a stencil with no address, he was no doubt itinerant. The stencil gives the words, ‘J. Fidler, Profilist’.

An example seen by Woodiwiss was in bust- length, cut with a long, sloping bust-line finish, and embellished rather coarsely with bronze. The profile was mounted, with the opening of the card mount shaped rather like a door with concave sides. All around the profile, on the mount, was a design embossed in the white card, and a further surround was built up by an oblong border of tiny leaves cut from brown paper. From the appearance of this extravaganza, it is possible that the artist was working nearer to 1850 than to 1840.
