Introduction:

Phyllis Howard Foster is known as a drawing mistress and miniaturist rather than a silhouette artist. However, is has been suggested that she helped her father, the eminent silhouette artist Edward Foster, in his work. Phyllis certainly had enough talent to be her father’s assistant, and made a successful career as a drawing mistress and miniaturist. However, it must be acknowledged that, as her father died when she was twelve, she may have been a little young to have much input. No silhouettes have been attributed solely to Phyllis Howard Foster.
