Chickfield, Mrs (McKechnie Section 1)

Recorded by Jackson (Dictionary), who describes her as an artist working in c. 1833, as a cutter at an address in the Market Place, Norwich. In his notebook, Woodiwiss twice mentions having seen work by a Mr Critchfield, who was working in the Market Place, Norwich, at about this time. It seems probable not only that both writers were referring to the same artist, but also that the artist was called Critchfield, since it is clear from Woodiwiss' notes that the silhouettes which he had seen were thus signed. Possibly some of the unattributed silhouettes in the Castle Museum and the Stranger's Hall in Norwich may well be by this artist. There is no information about the character of the artist's work. The inscription which Woodiwiss saw (which was either stencilled or handwritten) reads, 'Mr. Critchfield/ Market Place, Norwich.'
