Introduction:

There is a scrapbook in the Patton Collection which has the following written on it “Harriet Brooke, from her affectionate God-mother Barbara Anne Townshend, November 4th 1805, Stanley Place.” Inside are silhouette cuttings with inscriptions underneath them in a child’s handwriting, followed by children’s stories and illustrations. Harriet Brooke was not an artist, but her scrapbook shows the part that silhouette cutting played in education at the time.
