Wellings, William (McKechnie Section 5)

See Section Two for main entry

I have seen one small bust-length silhouette of a man (painted on ivory in c. 1790) which, although unsigned, experienced collectors agree must be by this artist. Though of a size for setting in a locket (1¾ x 1¼ in.), it was in a small frame of turned ebonised wood. It was painted in shades of black water-colour, apparently without gum arabic. The clothing (in particular the shirt-frill) and hair were painted in the same style as the head and shoulders are painted on many of the well-known full-length profiles of men by Wellings. Little detail was shown on the sitter's frock, and the bust-line was terminated by a marked projection of the arm truncation.
