Introduction:

Little is known about the background or career of profilist Thomas Johnson. From a known printed trade label, we can see that he worked in Harrogate. Johnson painted on flat glass in plain black, much like other artists of the time. However, he was unique in the way he projected the arm at the bustline finish. Using this characteristic two silhouettes have been attributed to him, dated 1790, which are now on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
